Don Mueang Airport to Bangkok: Transport Options for First-Time Visitors
4 min read· 5 Oct 2026

Don Mueang International Airport (code DMK) sits in the north of Bangkok and is the city's second airport. It handles many domestic and regional flights, including several low-cost airlines. If this is your first time landing here, the good news is that the airport is compact and there are several ways into the city. The key is matching the option to your luggage, your group and your arrival time.
First: make sure you are really at Don Mueang
Bangkok's two airports are far apart. Before arranging anything, look at your ticket or boarding pass:
- DMK = Don Mueang
- BKK = Suvarnabhumi
If you see BKK, our Suvarnabhumi Airport transfer guide is the one you need. Mixing the two up is one of the most common — and most stressful — arrival mistakes.
What arriving at Don Mueang is like
After landing you pass immigration (for international flights), collect your bags and exit into the arrivals area. Domestic and international arrivals use different parts of the terminal, so follow the signs for your flight type. Signage is in Thai and English.
Compared with Suvarnabhumi, distances inside the terminal tend to feel shorter, but queues at busy times can still take a while. Give yourself a buffer before any appointment.
Ways to get into Bangkok from DMK
Train (SRT Red Line)
A pedestrian connection links the airport to Don Mueang station on the SRT Red Line, which runs toward Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue), where you can change to the MRT.
Good for: light travellers heading to areas reachable by MRT.
Consider: the walk to the station and changes with luggage. Check current operating hours and fares on the official website before travelling.
Airport buses
Public and airport bus services run from Don Mueang toward key areas of the city.
Good for: budget travellers with modest luggage who are comfortable with public transport.
Consider: routes, stops and schedules change from time to time. Confirm the latest details at the airport information counter.
Public taxi
There is an official taxi area at arrivals. Fares are metered, with expressway tolls and any airport surcharge on top according to current rules.
Good for: spontaneous travellers and small groups.
Consider: car sizes vary and waiting times depend on demand. A family with large suitcases may need more space than a standard sedan offers.
Pre-booked private transfer
You arrange a car and driver for your arrival time before you fly.
Good for: families, travellers with several bags, late arrivals, and anyone who wants the price settled before landing.
Consider: you need to book ahead and share accurate flight and destination details.
Luggage: the deciding factor for many visitors
Low-cost flights often mean travellers pack carefully — but holidays and family trips still add up. Before choosing, count your large suitcases, cabin bags and anything bulky like strollers.
- One backpack each? Train or bus works well.
- Two to four large cases? A taxi or private car is usually easier.
- More than the vehicle allows? Book a larger vehicle or two cars.
Our DENZA D9 carries up to 4 passengers and 4 bags. If you are over either number, it is better to plan another vehicle in advance than to discover the problem at the curb.
Travelling with family
Children and older relatives change the picture. Walking to a station, climbing stairs or waiting in a long queue after a flight is harder with a tired child or a grandparent. A car that is ready when you exit means fewer decisions at the end of a long journey. If you use a child seat, mention it when you contact the service you book with so they can tell you what is possible.
When booking ahead makes sense
Booking a private car in advance is most useful if you:
- Land late in the evening or very early in the morning.
- Travel with children, older relatives or lots of luggage.
- Need to reach a hotel, hospital or meeting on time.
- Prefer a confirmed price rather than a meter.
If you are travelling solo with a backpack in daylight, public transport can be a great way to start your trip.
Details to prepare before booking
Have these ready — they make booking quick and reduce mistakes:
- Airport: DMK
- Flight number
- Scheduled arrival time and the pickup time you want
- Full destination address (Thai and English if you have it)
- Number of passengers and bags
Our step-by-step guide on how to book a private airport transfer explains the difference between arrival time and pickup time.
Plan the rest of your trip
Once you know how you will leave the airport, the rest gets easier. If this is your first visit, read our first-time Bangkok checklist. When you are ready, enter your trip on the booking page to check the price and whether the car is free.
